Professor Dipty Jain

Biosketch Dr. Dipty Jain received her MBBS and MD from Nagpur University, India. She was awarded the Rockefeller Fellowship for the year 1991-92 at McMaster University, Canada, where she completed her Masters in Medicine. She joined the faculty at Government Medical College, Nagpur, in 1984 and served as the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics from 2006 to 2022. In 2023, she was appointed as the Chairperson of the Task Force on the "National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission" by the Government of India. Additionally, she is an advisory member of the Global Sickle Cell Disease Network (GSCDN). Member of the Africa CDC/Texas Children’s SCD Continental Technical Working Group. Contribution to Sickle Cell Disease: Dr. Dipty Jain has achieved numerous milestones in the field of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). She pioneered the establishment of India’s first Center of Excellence for SCD at Government Medical College, Nagpur, in 1984; and conducted groundbreaking research on SCD within indigenous tribal communities of India in 1996. She was instrumental in adapting SCD management to the Indian context, including the Haplotype Arab Indian; introducing innovations such as fixed low-dose Hydroxyurea treatment and targeted newborn screening and Transcranial Doppler (TCD) for SCD patients in India in 2016; implementing a unique healthcare system and counseling approach tailored for SCD patients in India and developing comprehensive policies addressing SCD in India. She led as principal investigator in numerous national and international SCD projects and co-edited a special issue on SCD for Frontiers in Medicine and contributed to the Lancet Haematology Commission on Sickle Cell Disease in 2023. She is a member of Government of India’s Committee for preparing guidelines on the management of Sickle Cell Disease in India. She has contributed to multi-country efforts addressing SCD and published over 100 articles in international and national journals, contributing to many haematology textbooks on Sickle Cell Disease. She recently published "Sickle Cell Disease in India: Current Status and Progress" in The Lancet Haematology, 2024 (Jain et al.). She is also a recipient of the 2024 Ham Wasserman Lecture ASH. Dr. Jain's extensive work has significantly advanced the understanding and management of Sickle Cell Disease, particularly in the Indian context.
