Dr. Lewis Hsu is a Professor and Chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Director of Pediatric Sickle Cell at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). His training included MD-PhD from U of Rochester, Pediatric Residency at Yale, and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He led pediatric sickle cell centers at Emory in Atlanta, St. Christopher’s in Philadelphia, Children’s National in DC, and now UIC. He has devoted his career to sickle cell disease (SCD) for 3 decades as a physician-scientist-advocate. Early in his career, he worked on mouse models of sickle cell lung disease, the STOP study of stroke prevention, and the multicenter study of bone marrow transplantation. Current research includes improving the delivery of SCD therapies using dissemination and implementation science, community health workers, and global community engagement (mainly in Nigeria and Brazil). He volunteered as Chief Medical Officer for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (2020- 2024).
