Dr. Novelli is a Professor of Medicine and Clinician-Investigator who specializes in sickle cell disease (SCD). He leads the Division of Classical Hematology at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Adult Sickle Cell Program. His research focuses on vascular dysfunction in SCD, with key discoveries in thrombospondin-1 (TSP1) pathways, cerebral vasculature, and PET-based biomarkers of vaso-occlusion, resulting in multiple high-impact publications and NIH grants. A recognized leader in global hematology, he has played a pivotal role in international SCD initiatives like the American Society of Hematology-sponsored CONSA consortium and contributed to national policy efforts. Additionally, he has been active in mentoring and education, training the next generation of hematologists and leading NIH-supported training programs.
